Wisconsin is seriously reviewing and revising its energy system in light of the global warming crisis and an anticipated price on carbon emissions. Recently, the WI Governor’s Task Force on Global Warming published a report that recommends WI reduce its carbon emissions by 75% by 2050, and increase its RPS to to 20% by 2020 and 25% by 2025.
The consensus report also recommends Wisconsin modify its current legislation governing construction of new nuclear power reactors in two ways: first it recommends removing the prerequisite of an operating, federally-licensed waste repository for nuclear waste before any new nuclear reactors are built; and second, it recommends adding a provision that only Wisconsin companies can build new nuclear reactors in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin is at a crossroads: what decisions will it make about its energy future? Will it pursue efficiency and renewables with focus and intention, or will it get distracted by the economic boondoggle of nuclear energy?
A group of Wisconsin organizations has come together to warn WI citizens about the economic, environmental, and safety hazards of nuclear energy in a coalition for a Carbon-Free, Nuclear-Free Wisconsin:
